These heroic children battle for their lives, sometime for every breath. They inspire others with their strength, tenacity and dazzling will to live. We are giving them the opportunity to live like other children and experience life in the best way imaginable. We help them forget the tubes and pumps and needles and the daily challenges and experience the thrills of carefree childhood happiness. But Kids of Courage is also about the families who care for their sons, daughters, brothers and sisters every day without rest. By providing year round activities for the entire family and medically supervised dream trips, we give them an opportunity to relax and recuperate from the physically and emotionally exhausting lifestyles they lead.
Kids of Courage serves hundreds of families from all over the country. We help everyone regardless of their religious, social or economic background. The programming goes on all year round; complete with trips, weekends and fun events. All services provided are free to the children and families, we firmly believe that these families have enough burdens in their lives without worrying about the finances needed to participate in our activities. Our staff is all volunteer; except one administrative assistant. This differentiates Kids of Courage from most other organizations anywhere in the world. Kids of Courage relies wholly on the charitable donations that we receive from generous donors.
Our Medical Care
Providing critical supportive medical care during activities requires serious planning and preparation. We need to bring oxygen tanks, feeding pumps and many daily doses of a variety of medications. Our dream team of medical caregivers is highly experienced in treating pediatric and young adults “on the go.” They will provide minute-by-minute medical care for each of the boys and girls. They also have the confidence of the patients’ families who all know and trust the members of the team.
All activities are medically supervised by physicians, paramedics, nurses, physical therapists and specially trained lay staff. Campers are supervised by individual counselors one on one. For more complex campers two and three staff members are assigned to care for them. All destinations are coordinated with regional hospitals, medical resources, emergency response teams and others.
The Kids of Courage Medical Team is a leader in the expertise required to provide safe care and complete care. This includes providing mobile infirmary, logistical travel coordination with airlines, hotels and amusement parks.
On any given day during camp, more than 700 doses of medications are administered by the team. This logistical orchestra is nothing short of miraculous.
